ATP members celebrated International Translation Day with friends

International Translation Day 2011 – Translation is a bridge between cultures 

Traditionally, on September 30th, the international community celebrates Translation Day. 

This year the theme for International Translation Day was “Translation is a bridge between cultures”. 

Interpreters and translators, the members of the Association of Professional Translators of Moldova, and the Association partners and friends gathered on Friday, September 30th, to celebrate Translation Day. 

The event was held in a pleasant atmosphere with many memories and real stories that in a way marked translators’ activity. The event participants referred to challenges and difficulties they face as well as the translator’s role, considering it as one of the oldest profession in the world.  

Speaking of diversity of languages, translated from/to by ATP members (English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, German), we recall the novelist Umberto Eco who said that an international language could not be English or any other language, but translation.   

Emil Galaicu-Pău, a writer and translator, spoke passionately about art and the beauty of translation profession, and Nina Vartic, the professor of Speech and Acting Art at the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts, conveyed to the audience the messages regarding communication and cultural interaction in translations.  

Eleonora Rusnac, the ATP  president, also referred to the motto of International Day in her congratulatory speech and wished to those present great achievements, knowledge and skills that could contribute to successful professional development, to improve translation quality in order to promote the translation profession in society as being respectable, noble and always in high demand. 

At present, the Association of Professional Translators of Moldova is composed of 39 members.  

International Translation Day was established on September 30th, 1991, by UNESCO upon the suggestion of the International Federation of Translators.
